NLP in the dictionary

If the Wikipedia entry on NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is to be believed, it is all a bunch on mumbo jumbo. If that’s true, why then, have over 150,000 people in the UK been trained in it and report using it with success? Why do people like Pharrell Williams, Oprah Winfrey and Warren Buffet sing its praises? Why do a lot of counsellors and psychotherapists secretly use it without labelling it? Why is it so popular in the sports and business world?

Beware the boundary violators - we all know them, the space invaders and the time suckers. They waste your time, make you feel uncomfortable and seem to make you say and do things you don’t want to.

A lot of people have issues with setting and maintaining boundaries with others. Boundaries are the physical, mental and emotion ‘line’ between us and other people. Some people’s boundaries are too rigid and they push people away and some are too sloppy and this allows other people to violate their boundaries and get into their personal space. The good news is that once you are aware you can do something to enforce your boundaries and teach others to treat you appropriately. Here’s some top tips:

For many organisations, change is neither desirable nor simple. How can you help your people feel in control during times of transition? How can you minimise the ‘loss’ which often comes with change? What can you do to reduce conflict and build healthy teams, even when the rate of change keeps increasing? What behaviours help people thrive during change? Use these top tips from the experts:

Hypnosis has great health benefits and in a recent New Scientist feature is cited as being more effective than placebo when working with health issues. When you make it a part of your life it can be a great way to de-stress, allow you to relax as well as solve problems and create great ideas. Your body needs to relax, to unwind, clear the circuits and reboot and self hypnosis is a great way to do this.

Andy Cohen Wray

When Andy Cohen Wray begin learning NLP 18 months ago, none of us knew where it would take him. Working for Heathrow Airport at the time, Andy was a keen sportsman and had done some hurdling competitions, deep in the back of his mind though was an idea. Fascinated by the psychology of sports people, Andy had a dream to run his own business, coaching runners and professional athletes to get their minds in shape for their best performance in the sport they loved.

Karen NLP seminar

Karen and John are involved with the NLP leadership community both in the UK and Internationally. At the recent International NLP Leadership summit it was discussed, at great length, how we can ensure that people being trained are being trained well. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) has a patchy reputation and this is by and large because the difference between good and bad quality trainings varies drastically across the UK (and the world). The problem that potential students or even people with an idle curiosity have with searching for Trainers of NLP is that unless you’ve been in the field for ten years it’s hard to work out who’s good and who’s not.

deep thought

The words we use matter. When we speak or hear a word we make pictures and sounds in our minds, and that impacts how we feel and behave. So it’s important to be clear about what we are saying, to ourselves and others. In this series, John will explore the meaning and impact of common words we use and ask the question ‘Do we know what we’re saying?’

There are three main skill sets that ensure success in business: people skills, technology skills and problem-solving skills.
Problem-solving is a high level thinking skill. It involves accurately assessing an issue, identifying potential solutions and choosing the most effective solutions to implement. Building the problem solving skills of your team benefits your business by boosting productivity, improving teamwork and giving your team the ability to deliver results which stand out from the norm.
