Life Lessons from Wyatt Woodsmall

On 31st October Wyatt Woodsmall ran an NLP Masterclass for over 30 of us in Bristol. The subject was Science and Spirituality and the path towards spirituality - and whether it’s a path we want to take. It was a packed day with many full heads at the end, but in it all were some practical life lessons that we could all take away and do something with. Here are some key ideas that help with day to day life and the path onwards:

Your focus of attention matters

Where are you focusing your attention? Surprisingly most of us are not in the present moment. We are either rerunning the past, anticipating the future or fantasising. By practising staying in the present moment and giving all your attention to what you are doing now you are gaining a more full life experience and engaging in spiritual practice.

Witness your behaviour

As Fritz Perls said ‘Nature is not kind to those who lack awareness’ A problem many people have is that they over identify with their behaviours and they are unaware of their own automatic behaviour. By developing a Witness to your behaviour you can get distance and observe yourself, therefore able to reflect and make changes, rather than being controlled by the autopilot of life. The Witness helps us get real time learning and you can teach your children this skill too. To do this imagine you are watching yourself as you are right now, find what you are doing ‘interesting’ rather than judging it or emotionally reacting. Then ask yourself ‘what could I do differently in this situation in future?’. Then take those learnings back into your own body.

Keep the body in balance

Essential for health as well as spiritual practice, we often hold our bodies off balance. Learn to sit straight with your head directly over your trunk, stand grounded and keep your centre of gravity in your centre. Breathing can help with this, as can Yoga, Pilates or Meditation. All practices that are good for this. These are my reflections rather than any quote directly from Wyatt, I hope they are useful though and would love to hear other reflections, particularly from those who attended.
